(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 20 - Less than 600 days from the 2026 Winter Olympics which Cortina d'Ampezzo is set to co-host with Milan, Italy's mountain resort is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its first cable car, which was inaugurated in 1924 and eventually revolutionized the local economy, attracting more tourists and skiers.
The Cortina-Pocol cable car will be celebrated on August 24 with a town event that will be organized in the central Piazza Roma where "Spectaculars", the five Olympic circles, and the three Paralympic Agitos, the symbols of the 2026 Winter Games, have just been inaugurated ahead of the Winter Games.
The construction of the cable car connecting the centre of town to Pocol was an event that opened a new era for the Veneto town which became a symbol of mountain sports.
Additional cable cars were built in quick succession: the Faloria in 1939, Lagazuoi (1964), the chair lift of 5 Torri (1969), and the cable car Tofane in 1971, locally known as Freccia nel Cielo (sky arrow).
Eventually the whole area around Cortina was affected by the change with Auronzo, among other nearby resorts, hosting the first ski lift in 1951 to prepare for the 1956 Winter Olympics.
