Tajani says no deal with Left on ius scholae

Modern centre right must gain consensus, look to future

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 25 - Deputy Premier, Foreign Minister and centre-right post Berlusconi Forza Italia (FI) party leader Antonio Tajani said Sunday FI would not make any "shabby deal" with the Left over ius scholae, a possible law change to let the children of immigrants apply for citizenship after completing compulsory education at 16 instead of having to wait until they are 18 as at present.
"On the ius scholae we have only expressed our position, we have never said that it must be discussed today or tomorrow," said Tajani in Verona.
He said "FI cannot give up its identity. Not least because ius scholae would be stricter than the current citizenship law. But this has nothing to do with shabby deals or agreements, with the Left.
"I have always shown which side I am on".
Tajani added: "A modern centre right must gather consensus, we always win in the centre, if we abandon the centre, the centre right is destined to lose". (ANSA).
