(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 31 - A total of 964 men have been reported to authorities for various forms of abuse and violence against women over the past eight months - between January and August 2024- in Naples and its province, according to figures released by Carabinieri police on Saturday.
Overall Carabinieri police in the province of Naples said they have carried out 267 arrests of men caught red-handed while 697 others were reported to authorities.
On average, four cases of gender-based abuse and violence were recorded every day, 120 every month, according to the figures. The cases were examined by prosecutors in Naples, Northern Naples, Torre Annunziata and Nola.
Thanks to a law passed in December 2023, Carabinieri police said they were able to detain 10 people under investigation based on evidence including videos, photos, cell phone chats and GPS tracking provided by victims within the 48 hours following the violence they reported.
Carabinieri police also said they have created four spaces in the province of Naples where victims can report being abused, including in the Capodimonte and Stella districts of Naples and in Caivano and Ercolano, in the province of the port city.
In addition, a dedicated App which women can download on their smart watches or phonse called Bright Sky allows victims to request the intervention of Carabinieri police - an experiment kickstarted in 2022 which has benefited potential victims, also as a deterrent, said police. (ANSA).
