(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 3 - Italy's world number one Jannik Sinner beat American Tommy Paul 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 late on Monday to set up a clash with Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals of the US Open.
The 23-year-old beat Medvedev in the final of this year's Australian Open to win the first grand slam of his career, although the Russian prevailed in the tussle between the players at the quarter-finals of Wimbledon 2024.
"(It'll be a) tough match," Sinner said.
"It's going to be a lot of rallies, so hopefully I'll be ready physically. It's going to be a physical match, also a mental match.
"I won in Australia, he then won in Wimbledon. That was five sets. So hopefully it's going to be a good match".
In the women's singles, Jasmine Paolini's bid to reach a third consecutive grand slam final is over after she lost 6-3 6-3 to Czech Karoline Muchova in the last 16. (ANSA).
