(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 16 - Italy will open its controversial
Albanian migrant processing centres in October and does not fear
appeals from those being processed, Interior Minister Matteo
Piantedosi said Monday.
"With the migrant centres in Albania we will start in October.
There has certainly been a delay of a few months (initially the
opening was scheduled for last May, ed.): there have been normal
checks so that it was discovered, for example, that the ground
needed to be reinforced. That's all, very normal variations in
progress", said the minister.
As for the risk of appeals by migrants detained in Albania,
Piantedosi said "we do not fear them because this is a
regulation with which Italy anticipates a European regulation
that will come into force from 2026: there will be accelerated
border procedures with faster expulsions without hampering the
right to asylum.
"Then individual disputes will be dealt with on a case-by-case
basis". (ANSA).
