(ANSA) - ROME, OCT 7 - The number of transplants carried out
in Italy is set to grow significantly this year, according to
data presented at the national congress of the Italian Organ
Transplant Society (SITO), which is currently taking place in
Palermo.
"According to this year's projections, transplants are set to
rise to 4,392 compared to 4,079 last year," said Salvatore
Gruttadauria, the director of abdominal surgery at Palermo's
Ismett institute and the chair of the congress.
"The increase is nationwide.
"But I want to stress the magnificent result achieved by Sicily,
which hosts the congress this year.
"Our region has gone from being at the bottom for the number of
organ donations to being one of Italy's best regions, going from
15 to 30 donors per million inhabitants" (ANSA).
