TAR OKs deer hunting in Abruzzo

'Risk for species not proven' says court

(ANSA) - ROME, OCT 9 - The regional administrative court (TAR) in Abruzzo on Wednesday ruled in favour of culling 469 deer, as decided by the regional government in August 2024, rejecting an appeal presented by animal rights' associations who had requested a suspension.
TAR said that, "since the entire regional territory has not monitored", the number of deer to be shot was based on an underestimation of the size of the deer population.
The judges cited the "predominance of road safety, which also includes the safeguard of the physical security of individuals" over an "unproven risk" for the the species in their decision.
The associations can now appeal to the highest administrative court, the Council of State, against the decision.
Although the deadline is 30 days, they have until October 14 to file an appeal when, based on the regional government's decision, the deer culling campaign can start. (ANSA).
