Workplace safety must be permanent priority -Mattarella

(ANSA) - ROME, OCT 13 - President Sergio Mattarella said Sunday that workplace health and safety must be a "permanent priority" in a message to the ANMIL association representing people who have suffered labour-related disabilities.
    "Today Italy turns its thoughts to the people who have lost their lives or suffered injuries and illnesses because of their work," Mattarella said in a message sent on the national day for the victims of accidents at work.
    "Today is a day of reflection, remembrance and renewed commitment. Safety at work is a permanent priority for the Republic (of Italy).
    "Every life lost, every life compromised calls for a choral commitment to prevent further loss of health and ensure the dignity of those who work".
    Inail said Thursday that 680 fatal work-related accidents were reported to it in the first eight months of 2024, a rise of 3.5% on the equivalent period in 2023.
    The national labour accidents and occupational illness agency said 386,554 reports of accidents were submitted to it in total in the January-August period, up 0.9% compared to the same period in 2023 but down 20.2% on the first eight months of 2022.
