456 road accidents, 8 deaths a day in 2023 - ACI-Istat

Fewer deaths but slight increase in number of injuries

(ANSA) - ROME, OCT 14 - A reported 166,525 accidents on Italy's roads in 2023 involving injuries to people - compared to 165,889 in 2022, up 0.4% - caused 3,039 deaths - from 3,159 in 2022, down 3. 8% - and 224,634 injuries - compared to 223,475 in 2022, up 0.5% - according to data released by national statistics institute Istat and Italian Automobile Club (ACI) on Monday.
    On average, 456 accidents were registered daily with 8.3 deaths and 615 injuries, the report said.
    Although the number of accidents and injuries was slightly higher than in 2022, fatalities decreased in 2023, according to the data.
    Compared to 2019, the benchmark for the 2021-2030 decade, accidents shrank by 3.3%, road victims by 4.2% and the injured by 6.9%.
    The social cost of road accidents leading to injuries was nearly 18 billion euros in 2023, or 1% of national GDP, the report said. (ANSA).
