'Consortium' of 3 major mafias recognised in Lombardy

(ANSA) - ROME, OCT 14 - A Milan review court on Monday recognised the existence of a 'consortium' of Italy's three main mafias - 'Ndrangheta of Calabria, Cosa Nostra of Sicily, and Camorra of Campania - in the affluent northern region of Lombardy.
    The three-way alliance was recognised and 79 arrests ordered in the so-called 'Hydra' case in which a year ago a preliminary investigations judge had dismissed 142 arrest warrants out of 153, ordering only 11 arrests, while turning down Milan and Varese prosecutors' accusation of the three mafias forming a consortium dubbed "the Lombard mafia system".
    The Ndrangheta's alleged Lombardy pointman, Massimo Rossi, may now be arrested along with the Cosa Nostra alleged chief in the region, Giuseppe Fidanzati, and the Camorra's alleged regional head Gioacchino Amico, although the arrest warrants will not be immediately actionable because the trio can appeal to the supreme Court of Cassation.
