Meloni appeals for unity after govt split over Rai fee cut

(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 27 - Premier Giorgia Meloni appealed fro unity after the government split over cutting the license fee for State broadcaster Rai Wednesday.
    An amendment from the right-wing League party that proposed a return from 90 to 70 euros was rejected in committee with 12 no votes and 10 votes in favour.
    The centre-right Forza Italia (FI) party, the third government ally with Meloni's rightw-ing Borthers of Italy (FdI) and the League, voted with the opposition, which for days had been asking for the withdrawal of the League's proposal.
    Prime Minister Meloni's appealed to her center-right coalition saying "the majority's stumble on the issue of cutting the Rai fee does not benefit anyone." Sources in her office at Palazzo Chigi recalled how the government's priority in the 2025 budget is the commitment to "support families and businesses, always operating within a framework of credibility and seriousness".
    The leader of the leading opposition party, Elly Schlein of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), said "the majority is in pieces." The leader of the second-biggest opposition group, two-time ex premier Giuseppe Conte of the independent progressive 5-Star Movement (M5S), said "Meloni must clarify if a majority still exists".
