(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 3 - The structure and institutions of the European Union are too slow to cope with the challenges the bloc faces, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said Tuesday.
"Europe is now at a crossroads: it must choose whether to accelerate its integration or accept decline," he said via video link at the XX Spain-Italy Dialogue Forum underway in Barcelona.
"This is the meaning of both the Draghi and Letta reports.
"Certainly the EU structure does not help and the functioning of the community institutions is now clearly too slow with respect to the political decisions that the new international context presents us with regarding ecological transition and growing commitment in the security and defense sector. "An example of the complexity that Italy and Spain have inadvertently found themselves experiencing was the complication of the process of selecting and approving commissioners, a slowness and complication that compares with the speed with which other actors move in Asia and North America".
