(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 3 - Russians will no longer attack holy
sites in Syria, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Tuesday
after securing assurances from Moscow on the safety of Western
citizens in the wake of a Russian raid that struck a Franciscan
facility in Aleppo on Sunday.
"Thanks to international pressure and the request made by our
ambassador to Moscow, we have obtained from the Russians the
guarantee that holy sites in Syria will no longer be attacked
and that Western citizens gathered in some assembly points ready
to leave with the UN convoy will not be hit: among them there
are Italian citizens and they are not in danger", Tajani told
his NATO colleagues.
The Apostolic Nuncio to Syria, Cardinal Mario Zenari, told ANSA
on Monday that he is in daily contact
with bishops, priests and nuns in Aleppo where the situation is
extremely difficult. (ANSA).
