(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 3 - Deputy Premier and Transport Minister
Matteo Salvini said Tuesday that the main problem with
Stellantis lies in its ownership structure and called on
Chairman John Elkann to report to parliament after CEO Carlos
Tavares quit, adding that he should pay back the public money
the carmaker has taken from the Italian State in its current and
past guises.
"The problem with Stellantis is its ownership, more than Tavares
and his exorbitant demands," Salvini said.
"The ownership has little Italian in it now and it has taken
money for decades from Italy to open factories abroad.
"My thoughts as the Minister of Transport are with the workers
and their families.
""We will do everything to safeguard them.
"It has been the worst example of how to do business with public
money.
"Elkann should have already come to Parliament and with a
cheque, not words, with a cheque that reminds us how many
billions of euros of public money this company has collected
over the years.
"There are still loans guaranteed by the State for billions of
euros and in return we have closures, furloughs and layoffs
"When there is something to gain, this company cashes in and
takes off.
"When there is something to be asked for, it asks its workers".
