(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 29 - The Cardinal Vicar of Rome, Baldassare Reina, on Sunday opened the Holy Door of the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the third such Jubilee event following last week's opening of Holy Doors at St Peter's Basilica and Rome's Rebbibia Prison by Pope Francis.
Catholic pilgrims who walk through a Holy Door during the 2025 Jubilee Holy Year will get a plenary indulgence for their sins.
The opening of the Holy Door in the atrium of the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of Rome and "mother of all churches", precedes those that will take place at Santa Maria Maggiore (St Mary Major) on January 1st at 5:00 p.m., by Cardinal Archpriest Stanislaw Rylko, and at St. Paul Outside the Walls on January 5th at 10:00 a.m., by Cardinal Archpriest James Harvey.
It also coincides with the opening masses of the Holy Year in the dioceses of the world, celebrated by the respective bishops.
Present among others in the Basilica of San Giovanni, crowded with about two thousand faithful (many also the people who could not access and remained outside), were the auxiliary bishops, Cardinal Enrico Feroci, Archbishop Rino Fisichella, delegate of the Pope for the organization of the Jubilee.
The mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri also participated in the ceremony. (ANSA).
