Abedini to stay in jail U.S. officials tell Milan judges

Department of Justice says Swiss-Iranian citizen is dangerous

(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 2 - A document delivered by US judicial officials to an appeals court in Milan says Mohammed Abedini Najafabadi, a Swiss-Iranian citizen arrested at Milan's Malpensa airport at the request of the United States, is a dangerous individual and must remain in prison.
The four-page document was delivered through diplomatic channels to the Italian judges a few days after the arrest of the 38-year-old on December 16, before his defence attorney Alfredo de Francesco asked the court to grant him house arrest.
The appeals court is set to rule on the request.
Abedini is currently detained at Milan's Opera prison.
The note of the Department of Justice of Massachusetts is set to be examined by the State attorney's office at Milan's appeals court which will need to provide a non-binding opinion on the request to place Abedini under house arrest.
According to judicial sources, the State attorney's office is scheduled to deliver its opinion on Friday and the appeals court is expected to schedule a hearing next week on the case.
Abedini was picked up at Milan's Malpensa Aiport on a US warrant for allegedly supplying drone parts allegedly used in a January 2023 attack that killed three US servicemen in Jordan. (ANSA).
