(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 9 - Italy should lead international
efforts to lift sanctions on Syria after the Assad regime fell
to Islamist-led rebels a month ago, Turkish President Recep
Tayyip Erdogan told Premier Giorgia Meloni in a phonecall
Thursday, according to the Turkish president's office.
Erdogan expressed the hope that Italy could lead a process of
lifting sanctions against Syria, to facilitate the
reconstruction of the country, it said.
"Underlining the importance of acting without delay to rebuild
Syria, President Erdogan expressed his belief that the lifting
of sanctions against Syria, together with Italian leadership in
this matter, would benefit the process" of reconstruction," said
a statement from the presidency. (ANSA).
