(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 10 - Milan prosecutors are investigating at least five cases of alleged sexual assault during New year's Eve celebrations in Piazza Duomo in the northern Italian city, legal sources said Friday.
The alleged abuse came in the form of collective harassment of "taharrush gamea", an Islamic term for assault and even rape that was allegedly practised in Tahrir Square in Cairo in 2011, in Cologne in 2015, and more recently in India.
On Friday morning, interviewed in Liège also by investigators of the Flying Squad, a Belgian girl, who was with five friends, reported and confirmed allegations of assault given to the media.
In addition, an Italian woman has also said she is ready to report, while another case is also being investigated, which reportedly involves another Italian woman who was with her partner.
Another episode reportedly involves a South American woman, to be identified, and finally there is a case of a British couple.
Ina separate case, several north African youths are being probed for allegedly insulting the Italian flag and Italy during the celebrations at the Duomo, in some cases waving their own national flags. (ANSA).
