PD condemns violence says Schlein after Ramy protests

'Right must not exploit riots'

(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 12 - Elly Schlein, the leader of the largest member of the opposition, the Democratic Party (PD) on Sunday expressed full support to Bologna Mayor Matteo Lepore and local residents, condemning all acts of violence, after a protest against the death of Ramy Elgaml, a 19-year-old who died on November 24 while being chased by Carabinieri police in Milan, turned violent.
    "Full support to the mayor of Bologna and to Bologna citizens for the devastation and violence last night that also affected some members of the police forces, as well as the Synagogue and various stores", said Schlein in a note.
    Schlein expressed "all of the PD's solidarity", stressing the party "always condemns all acts of violence" and urging the Right not to capitalize on the violence.
    She also described as "important" the words of Ramy's family who called for peaceful demonstrations and spoke against any exploitation of their tragedy. (ANSA).
