(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 12 - The family of Ramy Elgaml, the 19-year-old Italo-Egyptian Milan resident who died on November 24 in a scooter accident while being chased by the Carabinieri police, firmly condemned in a statement issued on Sunday all forms of violence and vandalism after protests in his memory held the previous night turned violent in Rome and Bologna.
"We firmly condemn all forms of violence and vandalism that took place during demonstrations over the past few hours", the statement said.
"Losing Ramy represents for us a grave, indescribable grief.
"Our only desire is for justice to be served without any exploitation or manipulation.
"We are deeply saddened and concerned in learning that Ramy's name is being used as an excuse for acts of violence", stressed the statement.
Earlier this week, Ramy's father Yehia Elgaml told ANSA that the officers involved in the fatal car chase were the "wrong Carabinieri", after a video broadcast on Tuesday night appeared to show that the security officials intentionally rammed into the motorbike carrying his son.
However, he expressed confidence in law enforcement and in the Italian judiciary probing Ramy's death.
"There are also the real Carabinieri.
"They are not the same and I have confidence in the right ones", said Yehia Elgaml.
He also expressed "100% confidence in the Italian judiciary".
