(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 13 - Italy's Chief of Police Vittorio
Pisani on Monday thanked his officers for the "composure" they
have shown at recent demonstrations that have turned violent,
including protests in Rome at the weekend over the case of Ramy
Elgaml, a 19-year-old Italo-Egyptian who died on November 24 in
a scooter accident in Milan while being chased by the
Carabinieri police.
"The composure and balance of your conduct is a concrete example
of our civilized judicial advancement," Pisani said in an open
letter to officers on the State police website.
"The firmness of your actions guarantees the public safety of
our community, constantly ensuring the democratic stability of
the institutions.
"Thank you for your silent, daily commitment.
"The episodes of violence that characterised recent
demonstrations... have inevitably disturbed our consciences as
servants of the State".
