Salò strips Mussolini of honorary citizenship

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 27 - The city council of Salò, the northern Italian city where Benito Mussolini set up the Fascist German-puppet Italian Social Republic (RSI) in the last two and a half years of WWII, has revoked his honorary citizenship.
Twelve councillors voted in favour of the motion presented by Tiberio Evoli, a member of the centre-left municipal majority that promoted the initiative.
Three city councillor voted against and one abstained - all members of civic lists, including one which is close to the right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party.
"In today's Italy there is no room anymore for his ideas", said Francesco Cagnini, the 29-year-old mayor of the city overlooking Lake Garda, which had previously rejected twice a petition to strip Mussolini of the citizenship.
The Fascist dictator was given the honour in May 1924. (ANSA).
