Libya militia chief holds Schengen visa, not wanted

(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 21 - A Libyan militia leader visiting Rome originally said to be wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) is not in fact wanted by it and has a Schengen visa to travel around Europe freely, ANSA sources said Friday, adding that his security formation is recognised by the Libyan government as legitimate.
    Abdul Ghani al Kikli, a Libyan militia chief who visited Interior Minister Adel Jumaa who was hospitalized at the European Hospital in Rome after a recent assassination attempt, is the holder of a Schengen visa issued by Malta in 2023 and valid until November 25, 2025, which allows him to move around the European area without problems, they said.
    The sources underlined that there are no detention measures to be carried out against him nor is he the recipient of any Red Notice from Interpol.
    The formation of al Kikli, Stability Support Apparatus, it is also emphasized, depends directly on the Libyan Presidential Council (it was established by decree, signed in 2021 by the then president of the Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj, on 17 January 2021) and represents an official and legitimate security formation.
