(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 22 - Italy's Filippo Ganna said he had
"given it my all against two incredible champions" after a
thrilling end to the Milan-Sanremo Spring classic where the
Italian came second between winner Mathieu van der Poel of the
Netherlands and third-placed Slovenian great Tadej Pogacar, the
pre-race favourite.
"Today I gave it my all, until the end, and the team was
incredible.
"It was an honor to be part of this trio, they are two
incredible champions," added the man from Verbania in Piedmont.
Van der Poel said:
"Pogacar and Ganna were two incredible opponents, but today I
felt like I was having a great day.
"It's hard to believe, I was really focused on trying to get the
win. I knew the other two wanted to do a long sprint because
maybe they thought I would do the shortest sprint possible, so I
think I surprised them a bit when I went for it at the 300-meter
mark. I felt strong enough to hold out until the finish and it
was the right tactic." (ANSA).
