Nordio says thinking about sanctions for magistrates

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 24 - Justice Minister Carlo Nordio said Monday the government has been thinking for some time about sanctions against magistrates who voice political stances against the government but there is so far "nothing concrete".
The issue of sanctions for magistrates who express political ideas by failing to perform their third-party function "is not on the agenda and is not a bill that has been prepared by us: it is a reflection that we have been making for some time on the opportunity for some magistrates to express themselves in rude and aggressive terms - as unfortunately has also happened recently - towards government representatives, and on what the consequences could be. However, at this moment there is nothing concrete".
Magistrates union ANM voiced dismay at the weekend after reports of mooted sanctions for magistrates accused of bringing the category into disrepute with their statements to the media.
