(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 25 - President Sergio Mattarella on
Tuesday said Italy's penitentiary police has to deal with an
increasing number of difficult situations on a daily basis due
to the grave phenomenon of prison overcrowding.
"The penitentiary police is called to deal with difficult
situations of tension and suffering on a daily basis, which are
increasingly more frequent due to the ongoing grave phenomenon
of overcrowding", Mattarella said in a message to mark the 280th
anniversary of the foundation of the penitentiary police corps.
"The elevated professional level and spirit of service of Corps
members give a key contribution to the constitutional principle
of the re-educational function of a sentence for the possible
reintegration of detainees into social life despite the highly
critical conditions of the prison system", the head of State
noted. (ANSA).
