(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 15 - Italy needs to be "careful and
attentive" over its significant public debt, Economy Minister
Giancarlo Giorgetti said on Friday.
"When talking about the Italian economy we cannot ignore the
fact that we are part of a wider context" in which wars and
pandemics "have had an impact on public debt", Giorgetti told
Premier Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy (FdI)
rally Atreju in Rome.
"We are not in a normal period, but in an abnormal one, and that
obliges those who are most in debt to be careful and attentive,"
he continued.
The minister sad that "any type of action taken by the
government must inspire credibility" because "every fortnight
international financial institutions buy our debt and we pay
more or less based on our perceived reliability".
On Friday the Bank of Italy said the country's public debt hit a
new record in October, rising by 23.5 billion euro from the
previous month to 2,867.7 billion euro. (ANSA).
