(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 20 - The new European Stability and Growth
Pact agreed by EU finance ministers at a special ECOFIN meeting
"contains some positive things and others that are less so" but
most importantly it is sustainable for Italy, Economy Minister
Giancarlo Giorgetti said on Wednesday.
"Italy has achieved a lot," Giorgetti said of the deal to
replace the EU's old fiscal rules that were suspended in 2020
during the Covid-19 pandemic.
"However, and above all, what we are signing is a sustainable
agreement for our country aimed on the one hand at a realistic
and gradual reduction of the debt, while on the other looking at
investments especially for the national recovery and resilience
plan (NRRP) in a constructive spirit," he said.
Giorgetti's right-wing League party expressed its "satisfaction
with the compromise on the Stability Pact announced by Minister
Giorgetti".
"No more austerity: the debt reduction will be realistic and
gradual. Investments, especially those for the NRRP, are
protected in order to continue to make the country grow," the
party added. (ANSA).

'Realistic on debt reduction, constructive on NRRP investments'
