(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 7 - Workers at Stellantis's historic
Mirafiori plant in Turin staged a wildcat strike Wednesday after
manufacturing union FIOM briefed them on the
Italo-Franco-American carmaker's stance over a whole month of
lay-offs for the 3,000 workers there next month.
Mirafiori workers from the second shift started a spontaneous
strike after the FIOM meetings, and a procession of workers from
the 500 electric line left the plant.
"The workers are worried, they want to send a clear signal to
the institutions, Mirafiori cannot close," said the secretary
general of the Turin FIOM, Edi Lazzi, and the number one of the
Piedmont CGIL, Italy's biggest and most leftwing union
federation, Giorgio Airaudo.
Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said last week he cannot ensure
the future of its Italian plants unless the carmaker gets major
incentives to make electric cars.
But Chairman John Elkann reiterated his commitment to the
Italian plants in meetings Tuesday with Economy Minister
Giancarlo Giorgetti, President Sergio Mattarella, and Bank of
Italy Governor Fabio Panetta, among others. (ANSA).
