(ANSA) - ROME, APR 12 - Piedmont Governor Alberto Cirio and Turin Mayor Stefano Lo Russo joined thousands of trade-union members and students in a march on Friday to demand a future for the northern city's auto industry and new investment in its historic Mirafiori car plant.
The marchers included workers from Stellantis car factories in other parts of Italy and employees of other firms in the auto sector.
The major unions in the sector all also called an eight-hour strike, the first time they have staged a unified protest in 15 years.
The protestors carried a banner reading "Turin's Revival Starts From Mirafiori".
Unions fear divestments and job losses at Stellantis's Italian plants, but Carlo Tavares, the CEO of the Franco-Italo-US manufacturer, has pledged renewed commitment to them.
He recently said the Mirafiori plant was still the "beating heart" of the multinational group. (ANSA).
