EU must seek diplomatic solution to Africa crises - Tajani

'Europe should never appear to be a new coloniser'

(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 31 - The European Union (EU) must work towards a diplomatic solution to the crises following the recent coups in Niger and Gabon, Foreign Minister and Deputy Premier Antonio Tajani said ahead of an informal meeting of EU foreign affairs ministers in Toledo, Spain, on Thursday.
"In Niger and Gabon there is a situation of instability with a series of military coups with a domino effect," said Tajani.
"We continue to call for a diplomatic solution, in which Europe is present but never gives the impression of being a new coloniser," he continued, adding that the efforts by Algeria to mediate in the Niger crisis sparked by a military coup in late July were "welcomed".
"A military intervention would create new complications and increase migration flows," said Tajani.
"We will evaluate the sanctions in Niger, but we need a diplomatic solution that does not appear to be anti-African. As always, great caution is needed," he concluded.
On Wednesday military leaders in Gabon announced a coup following recent elections in the central African country.
