Massive cocaine haul seized from ship in Gioia Tauro

(ANSA) - Rome, April 2 - Italian police and customs officials on Wednesday seized 215 kilos of extremely pure cocaine in the southern Italian port of Gioia Tauro. The drugs were found in large hidden bags on a container ship from Ecuador carrying bananas that arrived in days ago at the Calabrian port.
    The street market value of the narcotics is estimated at 43 million euros.
    The load was discovered thanks to document cross-checking that led investigators to carry out scans on a series of suspected container ships, including the one from Ecuador.
