Lungotevere cordoned off

Local residents report trash trucks giving off leachate

(ANSA) - Rome, January 29 - A Rome judge on Friday ordered a section of the city's Lungotevere road along the Tiber River cordoned off because a toxic liquid has been detected there. The liquid, called leachate, contains environmentally harmful substances because it has drained from landfills or industrial waste. AMA trash company for years parked its trash compactors along Lungotevere Arnaldo da Brescia, a section of the river road lying near the central Piazza del Popolo square, where they operated 19 hours a day.
The court-ordered measure comes after local residents reported the AMA trucks for generating what their lawyer called "noxious liquids" and for being too noisy.
Rome prosecutors opened an investigation last July as a result of the citizen complaint.
