(ANSA) - Rome, May 11 - Italy's supreme Court of Cassation
upheld a 20-year prison term for Luca Varani, a man who hired
two men to attack his ex-girlfriend with acid late on Tuesday,
making the sentence definitive.
The woman, Lucia Annibali, was severely disfigured and
needed a series of plastic-surgery operations, including on her
face, in a case that appalled Italy and was seen as part of a
wider problem of violence against women.
The two Albanian men who actually carried out the attack
in April 2013 will serve 12-year terms.
"Now I'd like to resettle back into society like a normal
woman," said Annibali, a lawyer, after the ruling.
