(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 23 - Th eruption of Vesuvius that buried Pompeii in 79 AD was not on August 24-25 as previously though but instead on October 24-25, according to an Italian-led study published in the journal Earth-Science Reviews.
The study also said the devastating eruption scattered ash as far as Greece.
The study, which supplies tools to mitigate the risk of similar events, was carried out by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in collaboration with Cnr-Igag, the University of Pisa, the Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans in Clermont-Ferrand and the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.
As well as burying and preserving Pompeii, the eruption did the same, in a slightly different way that preserved organic material, to nearby Herculaneum. (ANSA).
