(ANSA) - ROME, OCT 12 - A worker was killed and another
injured in an accident at a work site in the quake-hit town of
Arquata in Abruzzo on Wednesday, local sources said.
The pair were reportedly installing a metal containing grid on
an outcrop when something went wrong and they slipped and fell
several metres.
The victim's condition immediately appeared critical and he died
despite treatment from an emergency medical crew.
The other worker was slightly injured in the fall.
An autopsy has been ordered.
It is the latest in a long spate of fatal workplace accidents in
Italy, where three deaths a day are now being reported.
The government has vowed renewed action on workplace safety.
Italy's three main trade union federations, CGIL, CISL and UIL,
will hold a rally in Rome on Saturday October 22 to demand more
action.
CISL General Secretary Luigi Sbarra said last week: "We must
stop the daily massacre in workplaces.
"It is a serious and unacceptable phenomenon.
"We can't allow three deaths per day to become a sad statistical
figure, almost an ineluctable destiny in our country". (ANSA).
