(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 19 - Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, who
has cancer, had his first session of chemotherapy in prison on
Thursday since being arrested in Sicily on Monday after spending
30 years on the run, sources said.
This may have been the reason 60-year-old mobster failed to take
part in a court hearing on Thursday regarding his conviction for
being among the mobsters who ordered the 1992 bombings in which
anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino
were among the victims.
Messina Denaro, who is in a maximum-security prison in L'Aquila,
could have taken part in the appeal-trial hearing in
Caltanissetta via video link. Proceedings in the trial were
adjourned to March 9. (ANSA).
