(ANSA) - ROME, APR 18 - A 17-year-old female bear that
attacked and killed a jogger in woods near the Alpine town of
Caldes in the northern autonomous province of Trento on April 5
was captured on Monday night.
The bear, tagged as Jj4, killed 26-year-old Andrea Papi while he
was out running on Mount Peller.
Papi was the first Italian to be killed by a bear in modern
times.
Province of Trento President Maurizio Fugatti subsequently
issued an order for Jj4 to be put down, but this was suspended
by a local administrative court on Friday following an appeal by
animal rights groups.
It was the second time the court overturned an order for Jj4 to
be put down.
The first ruling dates to 2020, after the bear attacked and
injured two hikers, a father and son, also on Mount Peller.
The same year, the Council of State, Italy's second-tier
administrative court, reportedly overturned a separate order by
Fugatti to capture the bear.
Last Thursday the provincial government of Trento also said a
second bear, an 18-year-old female tagged as Mj5, was to be put
down after it attacked a 39-year-old male hiker on March 5 in
the Rabbi Valley woods, a few kilometres from Mount Peller.
Environmental agency ISPRA had issued a favourable opinion on
putting down Mj5 as well as Jj4, Fugatti said. (ANSA).
