Catania airport closed due to Etna eruption

Eruption not visible due to low cloud cover

(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 21 - Catania airport in eastern Sicily was closed temporarily to air traffic on Sunday after a fresh eruption of nearby Etna covered the runway in volcanic ash.
Airport management company Sac said flights would be suspended until safety conditions had been restored.
Volcanologists earlier announced increased activity at Europe's highest active volcano, which however could not be seen directly due to low cloud cover.
Explosions could reportedly be heard in Adrano and Biancavilla to the southwest and lavic ash was also reported to have fallen in the same area and in Catania, further south. (ANSA).
