(ANSA) - ROME, AUG 19 - The hotspot on the stepping stone
island of Lampedusa, closer to Africa than to Italy, on Saturday
hosted 2,235 migrants against an official capacity of just 400,
local officials said.
Some 662 migrants were moved to Sicily Friday and another 700
are slated to follow Saturday, the officials said.
They said that thanks to various new measures the facility was
"able to cope with up to 3,000 people without getting clogged
up." (ANSA).
