(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 22 - Carabinieri police on Friday arrested
52 people in a nationwide operation targeting the 'Ndrangheta
mafia.
Over 400 Carabinieri were deployed in the operation, named
"Karpanthos".
The suspects are accused of crimes including mafia association,
criminal association for narcotics trafficking, extortion,
robbery and money laundering.
Of the people arrested, 38 were taken to jail, six were put
under house arrest and eight will have to regularly check in
with the police.
The 'Ndrangheta is widely considered to have become Italy's most
powerful organized-crime syndicate thanks to its control over
much of the cocaine that arrives in Europe and its reach has
stretched outside its base in the southern region of Calabria
and gone beyond the country's borders. (ANSA).
