(ANSA) - ROME, OCT 20 - Italy ground to a halt Friday amid a 24-hour transport strike that stopped bus, tram, metro and rail services across the country.
The 24-hour general strike called by the 'basic' trade unions in the public and private sectors got underway at nine o'clock Thursday night and will last until the same time Friday evening.
On the regional train transport front, two 'guarantee bands' when commuter services will be almost normal are in place from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Buses, trams and metros have been affected in a lesser way by the stoppage, and no major disruptions are reported in Italy's main cities. (ANSA).
