(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 6 - Forensic experts performing an inspection of a migrant found dead in waters off Lampedusa on Sunday afternoon said Monday the body is of a man.
The corpse, in an advanced state of decomposition and without hands, was spotted by tourists near Cala Pulcino in the southern part of the island and recovered by the fire brigade.
The dead man was wearing a rubber inner tube, which are often distributed among migrants and refugees attempting the treacherous sea crossing from north Africa to Italy to be used as lifebuoys.
So far this year 144,708 people have arrived in Italy by sea, up 66% over the same period in 2022 according to interior ministry data.
In the same period UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, says 1,633 people have died or gone missing in the central Mediterranean, compared to 1,453 last year.
