(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 15 - A 17-year-old girl saved her mother's life with the Heimlich Maneuver after the woman choked on a piece of meat during lunch in Cesena earlier this week, the Resto del Carlino newspaper reported.
The mother told the central-northern Italian daily that she had drunk a glass of water to try to unblock her throat but that had just made things worse because it pushed the piece of meat farther down her trachea causing her to black out.
At that point her daughter promptly intervened with the abdominal thrusts named after American doctor Henry Heimlich.
"I managed to do it thanks to a course at school," said the teenager.
"These courses should be compulsory," she told Il Resto.
The thrusts are commonly used to remove obstructing objects like food or toys from the wind-pipe. (ANSA).
