(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 18 - A doctor was shot dead in an ambush
in the southern region of Calabria on Saturday as she was
driving home at the end of her shift.
Francesca Romeo, 67, worked as an on call doctor in Santa
Cristina in Aspromonte near Reggio Calabria.
The woman's husband, 66-year-old Antonio Napoli, also a medic,
was injured in the attack.
Early reports suggest two people opened fire at their car near a
hairpin bend on the road linking Santa Cristina to Taurianova.
Local prosecutors have opened an investigation.
The National Federation of Doctors' Associations Fnomceo said it
was "shocked" by the news.
"We are confident in the work of the police to clarify the
motive," said Fnomceo president Filippo Anelli.
"The fact remains that another woman doctor has been killed on
her way home from work. We demand protection, we demand
security. We cannot consider curbing the desertion of the
National Health Service, especially in tormented areas like
Calabria, if we do not ensure appropriate conditions for the
exercise of the profession," he added. (ANSA).
