(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 18 - Scientific research is fundamental for the future of Italy said President Sergio Mattarella at a ceremony marking the centenary of the National Research Council (CNR) on Saturday.
"The future comes to us through scientific research and this is fundamental for Italy," said Mattarella.
"Research is the future of our country. Researchers truly bring the future to us," he added.
The president also said that research is an "instrument of peace" and that the network of cross-border collaborations provide "an alternative message to the international tensions that, in their senselessness, create problems for the world".
"It is important that (research) is not interrupted by international tensions. The quest for knowledge is what unites humankind in its best expressions," concluded Mattarella.
"Today we are celebrating the ability of the CNR to look ahead," said CNR President Maria Chiara Carrozza at the ceremony to celebrate the creation of Italy's largest research organisation on November 18, 1923.
"The scientific method proceeds with tenacity, resilience and respect for the rules," she continued. (ANSA).
