Turetta's parents forego prison interview with son

(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 29 - The parents of Filippo Turetta, the 21-year-old Padua University biomedical university student under investigation for kidnapping and murdering his ex girlfriend Giulia Cecchettin on November 11, on Wednesday forewent their authorized interview with their son in Verona's Montorio jail where he is being held.
    The decision is understood to have been motivated by the need to provide psychological support to both Turetta and his parents.
    On Tuesday Turetta admitted to killing Cecchettin in a statement he gave to a preliminary investigations judge and said he was "heartbroken" and wanted to pay fully for what he had done.
    He was arrested near Leipzig in Germany on November 19 after more than a week on the run and extradited to Italy for prosecution last Saturday.
    Cecchettin's murder has shocked Italy, in part because of the age of the victim and murderer and because of the brutality of the killing.
    It has also heightened the need to combat gender-based violence as it was only part of a long series of femicides in Italy.
