(ANSA) - ROME, APR 22 - Prison-rights association Antigone
said in a report on Monday that over 100 inmates have committed
suicide in Italian jails since the start of last year.
It said that at least 71 people took their own lives in prison
here in 2023 and at least 30 inmates have committed suicide so
far this year.
It added that there are also several cases of prison deaths in
which the cause is yet to be established.
It said the 2023 figure was the second highest of the last 30
years, behind 2022, with 85 confirmed prison suicides. (ANSA).
