(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 20 - Naples was blanketed in ash Thursday from a huge wildfire that broke out in the Camaldoli hillside wood district of the southern port city Wednesday night.
Several quarters of the city, including the historic centre, were covered in the fine black and grey powdery substance coming from the wood overlooking Naples.
Mayor Gaetano Manfredi said the blaze was "probably arson" and stressed the need to "protect our forestry heritage".
Canadairs are dumping water on the fire in an attempt to quench the flames.
The situation is said to be improving. (ANSA).
