Extreme weather causes damage, disruption in north Italy

Floods around Lake Como, landslides, fallen trees close roads

(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 12 - Extreme weather was causing major damage and widespread disruption in the northern region of Lombardy on Friday, with torrential rain causing flooding around Lake Como, while a tornado hit the province of Varese, knocking over trees, causing road closures and disrupting rail services.
Blown-over trees and landslides also closed roads in the provinces of Lecco, Sondrio, Bergamo and Brescia.
In Milan lightning struck electrical boxes near the Cimiano metro station, causing services to be suspended on a section of the city's line 2 of the subway.
Scientists say the climate crisis caused by human greenhouse gas emissions is making extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, supercharged storms and flooding more frequent and more intense.
Although there are many sources of the greenhouse gases that are causing global heating, the main driver is the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal, sales of which generate huge profits for the world's energy giants. (ANSA).
